Adventures in Composting: From Waste to Food and Back Again

Want to introduce your kids to the benefits of composting, and get them thinking about waste reduction?  This is the workshop for you! We will have an interactive, hands-on time talking about compost, worms, and fungi, including up-close looks at all three with microscopes. Plus we'll start growing some oyster mushrooms on cardboard! This is your chance to get up close with the issue of food waste, and learn how to turn waste into something good for the earth – and tasty too!

When: June 14, 4:30 - 5:45 PM

Where: New Holland Ave. Recycling Center, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster PA

This even is hosted by Eve Bratman, Environmental Studies professor at Franklin & Marshall College. Check out all the neat stuff Eve does with composting in Lancaster! (www.Lancastercompost.us)

We’ll have all sorts of analog versions of all the things you use your little pocket device for so you can get out there and check out the world.

All ages! All free!

Police Community Garden-fill raised beds with soil

Police Community Garden-fill raised beds with soil

What: Help build & maintain gardens at the Police Community Garden (located between PCAD and the Police station).

When & what else: Monday 5/16, noon. Help build and install raised beds. Meet at the Police Community Garden. Bring tools, if you have any.

When & what else: Thursday, 5/19, 9 am - whenever we're done! Help wheelbarrow delivered dirt into the raised beds.

A bit more from Glenn (in italics):

I am going to try to get the kids from the Mix to help with filling the beds with soil, then talk with them about some things they want to plant. It is unfortunately late in the season for a few things but there is plenty we can still put in the ground. I’ll have a list of options for them, I would love to get some multi-cultural produce growing (don’t know if that’s the right term or not J ) but I want input from them since this first season the final produce will go to them and their families!
